EMP Protection

EMP (electromagnetic pulse) protection prevents a shelter's power, communications and control electronics from being disabled by a sudden electromagnetic field.

Why EMP matters

A structurally sound shelter loses its purpose if the electronics fail. Fan control, monitoring, lighting and communications left unprotected break the entire life-support chain.

Faraday cage principle

The shell is designed as a continuous conductive surface. What matters is not the surface itself but its discontinuities: door perimeters, ventilation openings and cable penetrations.

Filtering penetrations

Power and data lines are terminated with EMI filters and surge protection before entering the shell. Ventilation openings use waveguide grilles.

Segregating critical equipment

Spare control boards, radios and chargers are stored in a separate shielded cabinet. Rather than trusting a single layer, a spare-hardware strategy is applied.

Verification and maintenance

Shielding performance is measured after installation; gaskets and grounding connections are inspected periodically. A loosened ground can void the whole design.

It depends on the threat profile; it is strongly recommended for critical infrastructure and long-duration scenarios.
Can it be retrofitted?
Partly. Penetration filtering and a shielded equipment cabinet can be added later; full shielding is far more effective at design stage.
